The way to the solution - the simple case.

Often you will find the main principle of a solution to a problem, by looking at a more simple form of the question. This principle will help us with the tower of Benares. Our knowledge about some simple towers will help us to give an answer to the real question. The simplest tower that we will look at is one of three disks. This tower shall be moved from one area to another.

Is it possible to move a tower of three discs from area 1 ("Platz 1") to area 3 ("Platz 3") and respect these rules:

• Rule 1: Each disc may just be above the marked areas ("Platz 1", "Platz 2", "Platz 3")
• Rule 2: Not more than one disc may be moved at a time
• Rule 3. A disc may not be put above a smaller disc

Take a little time to find your solution. You might build a real tower with three different sized books and try to find your solution. You might even use this virtual modell to give it a try. Anyway, there is a solution as you will see on the next page, but it might take you some seconds to find it. Well, we are not in a hurry...
